OIDP Blood and Plasma

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) – Blood and Plasma Donation Campaign
Blood and plasma are needed on an ongoing basis to treat life-threatening conditions. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, our nation’s blood and plasma supply dropped to historic lows. This shortage threatened the health care system and the people who depend on these life-sustaining products for surgeries, cancer treatments, rare diseases, serious injuries, blood disorders, childbirth, and more. While some areas of the country have seen improvement, others are still struggling to meet the demand. Additionally, donation levels and the need for these products can change with the time of year and clinical needs. Importantly, blood and plasma can only be donated by generous individuals, so the only way to meet increased demand and ensure we have life-saving and life-sustaining therapies is to encourage more people to donate.
To raise awareness of the importance of blood and plasma donation and encourage Americans 18+ to donate, HHS recently launched a new campaign, Giving = Living. The campaign is brought to life through compelling stories from people who have received life-saving blood transfusions and who have received plasma-based therapies. These testimonials, which are featured in the out of home ads, offer inspiration and motivation, while conveying how donating regularly helps those in need.
